Books
Lost Connections, Johann Hari
Depression and anxiety are now at epidemic levels. Why? Across the world, scientists have uncovered evidence for nine different causes. Some are in our biology – but most are in the way we are living today. This New York Times best-selling book – lauded by everyone from Oprah to Elton John – offers a radical new way of thinking about this crisis. It shows that once we understand the real causes, we can turn to pioneering new solutions – ones that offer real hope.
Time to Care, Dr. Robin Youngson
In today’s beleaguered healthcare system, burdened with epidemic levels of stress, depression and burnout, Time to Care offers health professionals the opportunity of renewal. Here are the secrets to building a happy and fulfilling practice, wellbeing and resilience. Youngson bravely relates his own transition, from detached clinician to a champion for humane whole-patient care; at ties poignant, sometimes funny but always brutally honest.
Doctor You, Jeremy Howick, PhD
Throw away your statins, painkillers and antidepressants and pick up this book to find out how you can harness the body’s natural powers to heal itself.Doctor You contains the first hard scientific evidence to show that some so-called alternative or natural treatments are not only cheaper than industrially produced drugs and lacking the harmful side effects, they are also equally effective.Written using the latest, high quality, conventional evidence Doctor Youarms you with knowledge that will empower you to make the right choices about what drugs to take, what drugs to give your children, and when you should let your body do its thing.
Online Courses
Based on Integrative Behavioural Couple Therapy, OurRelationship promotes emotional acceptance and associated behaviour change. The program takes 7-8 hours to complete, is designed to be undertaken as a couple (although it is possible to do it as an individual). Partners work separately and then have a joint conversation at the end of each of the three sections – titled ‘Observe’, ‘Understand’, and ‘Respond’. Respectively, these sections focus on observing the current state of one’s relationship, understanding problems, differences, stressors and patterns of communication, and how to accept, change, and communicate more effectively.
As chronic and lifestyle-related diseases continue to rise, traditional 1:1 consultations are proving to be an increasingly insufficient and inefficient means of managing the needs of our patients. Shared Medical Appointments (SMAs) may serve part of the solution.
